Bangla Academy Australia opened the Queensland Branch

Bangla Academy Australia paid tribute to the martyrs of the Bangla language movement, and of the liberation war for independence of Bangladesh. In Brisbane this program started with honouring the language martyrs and war vaterns with one minute’s silence. As arranged the local bangla speakers gathered at the ‘Seventeen miles Rock Riverside park’ next to the Brisbane river.

This program was chaired by a senior educationist, Associate Professor Muhammad Alauddin from the University of Queensland. The Director of Bangla Academy Australia conveyed a message to all from the renowned educationist Emeritas Professor Anisuzzaman. He is the Chairman of the advisory council of Bangla Academy Australia. Mr. Anwar Akash also conveyed a message to the participators from Professor Nazrul Islam, the former Chairman of the University Grants Commission. He is a valuable member of Bangla Academy Australia’s ‘Quality in Higher Education’ team and recently visited Australia.

The main object of this meeting was to promote the rich Bangla langague and culture among the budding Bangla speakers in Queensland. Bangla Academy started a journey with the aim to develop the skills and expertise among our youngsters in Queensland and other states of Australia. A formation meeting has been already held in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.

Amongst the key speakers were teachers and students from the University of Queesnland, the Queensland University of Technology, the Griffith University and other organisations. They delivered speeches on the importance and urgency of the Academy’s product and services being used.

Prominent amongst the speaker were Professor Tapan Saha, AKM Shahinuzzaman, Lilac Shahid, Dr. Shamsul Arefin Bhuiyan, Mahmudul Alam Khan, Shahed Sadruddin, Sanchita Khan, Anup Sarkar, Kazi Nure Alam, Nazmul Islam.

The founding Director of Bangla Academy Australia Mr. Anwar Akash was the key guest speaker. He delivered his speech in a very clear and precise manner about the past, present and future ventures of the Bangla Academy Australia. He also ran a power point presentation to make it very easy for the Brisbane audiance to understand.

At one statge he ran a question and answer session where all the questions were answered for the audiance. Just to let you know there are a high demand for Academy’s program from the wider community of Bangla speaers living in the different countries of the world. Bangla Academy International started it’s journey in 2011 on the basis that any people can access these services of the Academy.

A formal discussion took place last year when ‘Brisbane Bangla Radio’ broadcasted Mr. Anwar Akash’s interview for the people of Queensland. Then he explained about the ‘Student Ambassador Leadership Program’. After todays meeting the audience accepted the program and requested to include the interested people from Queensland. The Academy confirmed about the inclusion of the ‘leadership program’ in near future. Any one can access the Academy’s website www.banglaacademy.com to register and including themselve or to access any information about Bangla Academy Australia. On a test basis this newly designed website began it’s journey yesterday.

The director Mr. Anwar Akash took the opportunity to pay respect to all the valuable members in Australia and around the world for their dedication and great contribution in many different fields.

In Melbourne Last year on the 7th September 2015 a seminar took place at the University of RMIT to start the Academy’s journey in greater Victoria. Students, teachers and people from Melbourne gathered at the RMIT to be part of Bangla Academy Australia. In the heart of Melbourne city the audience remembered the language martyrs and the victims of the liberation war from Pakistan. We remembered mass killing by the Pakistani army and their followers rajakar, albadar and other people during the liberation war.

Dr. Pratish Bandapaddhay chaired the seminar where a group of people started the journey for the Victorian Branch of Bangla Academy Australia. Professor Sharif-As-Saber was selected to be an advisor and Dr. Saniat Islam and Mr. Morshed Kamal also became members of this committee. This is seen to work cohesively in the community.

In Adelaide last year on the 19th August 2015 the ‘Bangla Radio Adelaide’ invited the Director of Bangla Academy Australia for an interview followed by a general discussion from the South Australia side. As a token of love Mr. Anwar Akash remembered and conveyed ‘thank you’ to all the people of South Australia.

To avail the opportunity to work in the name of ‘mother language’ a group of people became very happy and they congratulated the Academy. The proper presentation of facts and figure by the director was highly appreciated by the audience. They showed their eagerness to be part of the Queensland team and around fifteen people showed interest to be part of the management committee. No doubt this is a good initiative and shows that the people are interested to be part of the program. Primarily, Professor Tapan Saha and Dr. Muhammad Alauddin were selected to advise the committee about starting work. They are also the proud member for Academy’s ‘Quality in Higher Education’ program. The other members of the management committee will be announced soon.

The advisors and the audience requested all Bangla speakers to come forward, so that they we can start to provide services. Bangla Academy assured us that a ‘National Competition’ on Creative Writing, Debate and Public Speaking would be held soon Australia wide where all interested will be able to participate.

To carry on this project Bangla Academy Australia has already established branches in the major states of Australia. This project will start work on the basis of interest and participation from individuals.

The program ran smoothly and a question and answer session involving audience and speakers was held, interrupted only by a snack break enjoyed by all. Mr. Akash thanked the audiance for their kind participation from various distant locations. Dr. Alauddin Also thanked them. Every one agreed that after a long time, these kind of initiatives will be a reflection on the fact that a quality program by dedicated people can enhance the life of our yoursters in Australia.

We also hope that building up linguistic skills and cultural awareness will contribute to preventing our youth from being seduced or bullied by fringe dwellers and fundamentalist.

বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়ার কুইন্সল্যান্ড শাখার উদ্বোধন ও স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত সভা

ব্রিসবেনে গতকাল বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়ার আয়োজনে বাংলাদেশের মহান ভাষা আন্দোলনের শহীদদের স্মরণের মধ্য দিয়ে শ্রদ্ধা জানানো হল ভাষা শহীদ এবং একাত্তরের শহীদদের। শুরুতে তাঁদের সম্মানে এক মিনিট নীরবতা পালন করা হয়। পূর্ব সিদ্ধান্ত অনুযায়ী ব্রিসবেনের বাঙ্গালীরা এদিন সমবেত হয়েছিলেন ‘সেভেনটিন মাইলস রক রিভারসাইড’ পার্কে। ব্রিসবেন নদীর কোল ঘেঁষে মনোরম পরিবেশে এ আয়োজনে জড়ো হয়েছিলেন স্থানীয় বাঙ্গালীরা।

কুইন্সল্যান্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রবীণ শিক্ষাবিদ সহযোগী অধ্যাপক মুহাম্মদ আলাউদ্দিনের সভাপতিত্বে এ সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। একাডেমির পরিচালক আনোয়ার আকাশ অনুষ্ঠানের শুরুতেই একাডেমির উপদেষ্টা বাংলাদেশের দেশবরেণ্য শিক্ষাবিদ প্রফেসর আনিসুজ্জামানের শুভেচ্ছা বানী সবাইকে পৌঁছে দেন। এর পর শুভেচ্ছাবার্তা জানানো হয় সম্প্রতি অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় আগত সাবেক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় মঞ্জুরি কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান প্রফেসর নজরুল ইসলামের পক্ষে। তিনি বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়ার ‘কোয়ালিটি ইন হায়ার এডুকেশন’ প্রকল্পের একজন সম্মানিত সদস্য।

অনুষ্ঠানের মুল ভাবনা ছিল কুইন্সল্যান্ড এর প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলে বাংলা ভাষার অমিয় বারতা পৌঁছে দেবার কাজের গুরুত্ব আরোপ করা। উপস্থিত সুধীজনদের মধ্যে স্থানীয় কুইন্সল্যান্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, কুইন্সল্যান্ড কারিগরি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, গ্রিফিথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় সহ বিভিন্ন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রতিষ্ঠানের অনেক প্রতিনিধি তাঁদের মূল্যবান বক্তব্য তুলে ধরেন। উপস্থিত বক্তাদের মাঝে প্রফেসর তপন সাহা, একেএম শাহিনুজ্জামান, লাইলাক শহীদ, ডঃ শামসুল আরেফিন ভুইয়া, মাহমুদুল আলম খান, শাহেদ সদরুদ্দিন, সঞ্চিতা খান, অনুপ সরকার, কাজী নূরে আলম, নাজমুল ইসলাম প্রমুখ বক্তব্য রাখেন।

মুল আলোচক ছিলেন একাডেমির প্রতিষ্ঠাতা পরিচালক জনাব আনোয়ার আকাশ। তিনি অত্যন্ত প্রাঞ্জল ভাষায় একাডেমির অতীত, বর্তমান এবং ভবিষৎ কার্যক্রমের উপর স্লাইড প্রেজেন্টেশন এর মাধ্যমে বিভিন্ন বিষয় তুলে ধরেন। এর পরে তিনি উপস্থিত সুধিজনের প্রশ্নের উত্তর করেন। উল্লেখ্য বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়া বিশ্বাঙ্গন থেকে ক্রমবর্ধমান চাহিদার প্রেক্ষিতে ২০১১ থেকে আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে কাজ করার অভিপ্রায় নিয়ে ‘বাংলা একাডেমি ইন্টারন্যাশনাল’এর যাত্রা শুরু করে|

এ আলোচনার মধ্য দিয়ে কুইন্সল্যান্ডবাসী স্বাগত জানালো ‘বাংলা একাডেমি ইন্টারন্যাশনাল’ এর কার্যক্রমকে। পরিচালক আনোয়ার আকাশ বিশ্বব্যপি ছড়িয়ে থাকা সকল গুণী সদস্যদের কৃতজ্ঞতার সাথে স্মরণ করেন। এ কাজের সাথে যুক্ত হতে চাইলে বিশ্বের যে কেউ তাঁদের আগ্রহের কথা একাডেমির ওয়েব সাইট থেকে জানাতে পারবেন। গতকাল একাডেমির ওয়েবসাইটের নূতন একটি সংস্করণ পরীক্ষামূলক ভাবে আরম্ভ হয়েছে। যার ঠিকানা www.banglaacademy.com

গত বছর ৭ সেপ্টেম্বর, ২০১৫ অস্ট্রেলিয়ার ভিক্টোরিয়ায় একটি সেমিনারের মধ্য দিয়ে সেখানে একাডেমির কার্যক্রম শুরু করে। অবিচল আস্থায় ভিক্টোরিয়ার বাঙ্গালীরা সেদিন জুথিবদ্ধ হয়েছিলেন। মেলবোর্ন শহরের প্রাণকেন্দ্র আরএমআইটি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বাংলা ভাষার শহীদদের স্মরণের মধ্য দিয়ে মেলবোর্ন এর উজ্জ্বল নক্ষত্র ডঃ প্রতীশ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় এর সভাপতিত্বে সে কার্যক্রমের সাথে একাত্মতা ঘোষণা করে ভিক্টোরিয়াবাসি। প্রফেসর শরীফ আস-সাবের এর নেতৃত্বে ডঃ সানিয়াত ইসলাম এবং মোরশেদ কামাল সমন্বয়ের কাজ করছেন। এ কাজের সাথে যুক্ত হয়েছেন ভিক্টোরিয়ার অসংখ্য মানুষ। এ ছাড়াও একাডেমি ‘রেডিও বাংলা এডেলেড’ এর আমন্ত্রণে সাউথ অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় ইতিমধ্যে একটি আলোচনা পর্ব শেষ করেছে ১৯ অগাস্ট ২০১৫। একাডেমির পরিচালক এদিন সকলের সহৃদয় এগিয়ে আসার কথা কৃতজ্ঞতার সাথে স্মরণ করেন।

ব্রিসবেনে বছরের শুরুতে মায়ের ভাষার কাজের সাথে যুক্ত থাকতে পেরে নিজেকে ভাগ্যবান মনে করেছেন অনেকেই। পরিচালকের সঠিক তথ্য-উপাত্ত উপস্থাপন, অনুষ্ঠানে মানুষের স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত আলাপ, একাডেমি সম্পর্কে জানতে চাওয়া দেখে মনে হয়েছে বিষয়টির সাথে সবাই যুক্ত থাকতে চান। কুইন্সল্যান্ড এর অসংখ্য মানুষ একাডেমির কার্যক্রমের সাথে যুক্ত হতে চাওয়াটা নিঃসন্দেহে আনন্দের।

কুইন্সল্যান্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্বনামধন্য শিক্ষাবিদ প্রফেসর তপন সাহা এবং ডঃ মুহম্মদ আলাউদ্দিনকে উপদেষ্টা করে একটি কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে। তাঁরা দু’জনেই একাডেমির ‘কোয়ালিটি ইন হায়ার এডুকেশন’ প্রকল্পের সদস্য। এ কমিটিতে সাড়া দিয়েছেন অসংখ্য মানুষ। এ কমিটি পরীক্ষামূলকভাবে কাজ আরম্ভ করবে এবং সময়মত কমিটির সবাইকে পর্যায়ক্রমে পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া হবে। একাডেমির কুইন্সল্যান্ড শাখার পক্ষ থেকে এ কাজকে এগিয়ে নিতে কুইন্সল্যান্ডের সকল বাঙ্গালীকে যূথীবদ্ধ হবার অনুরোধ করা হয়েছে।

নিউ সাউথ ওয়েলস ছাড়াও অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বড় রাজ্য গুলোতে বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়া ইতিমধ্যে শাখা স্থাপন করেছে। ভিক্টোরিয়া, সাউথ অস্ট্রেলিয়া এবং কুইন্সল্যান্ড এর মধ্যে অন্যতম। এ কার্যক্রমের সাথে অন্য রাজ্যগুলোকেও তাদের আগ্রহের ভিত্তিতে যোগ করা হবে।

মাঝে খাবার দাবারের একটি ছোট্ট বিরতি সহ পুরো অনুষ্ঠানটি ছিল তথ্য সমৃদ্ধ। দুর দূরান্ত থেকে আসার জন্য একাডেমির পক্ষ থেকে সবাইকে ধন্যবাদ জানানো হয়। অনুষ্ঠানের সভাপতি ডঃ মুহম্মদ আলাউদ্দিন সবাইকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে অনুষ্ঠানের সমাপ্তি ঘোষণা করেন।

আমরা মনে করি আমাদের ভাষা এবং সংস্কৃতির প্রতি যত্নবান হয়ে আগামী প্রজন্ম সমাজের অপসংস্কৃতি আর অন্ধবিশ্বাস থেকে তরুণ প্রজন্মকে মুক্ত রেখে মিথ্যা রোধে এগিয়ে আসবে। একাডেমির এ জাতীয় একটি উন্নয়ন মূলক আয়োজনের মধ্য দিয়ে অস্ট্রেলিয়ার বাঙ্গালীরা সুন্দর একটি পথের সন্ধান পাবে বলে আমরা বিশ্বাস করি। এ মহৎ উদ্যোগের জন্য পরিচালক আনোয়ার আকাশ এবং বাংলা একাডেমি অস্ট্রেলিয়াকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই।

International Mother Language Day at the NSW Parliament

The Bangla Academy Australia hosted a seminar for ‘My Language My Freedom’ on February 20.  The seminar was the first event in three days commemoration based on UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day.

This year the event was held at the Theatrette at the NSW Parliament House. The seminar featured presentations from a diverse range of speakers, Hon. Victor Dominello MP Minister for Citizenship & Communities and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs was the chief guest. Special guests were present including Hon. Shaoquett Moselmane, MLC, Mr. Anthony Khouri, Honorary Consul-General of Bangladesh, Mr. Lou Petrolo, Strategy & Community Engagement Manager SBS Australia, Mr. Trent Wilson, Head Teacher Languages, Hornsby Girls High School, Mr. Albert Vella, President, Federation of NSW Community Language School Program, Mr. Béla Kardos, President Hungarian Council of NSW, Catharin C Kori, Director Hungarian Language School, Dr Akhteruz Zaman, Academic, University of Technology, Mr. Phil Voysey, Director Cultural Connexions, Student representative Mr ASM Shahriar Ifti from Sydney Secondary College, Mrs Yasmeen Islam Social activist and Mr. Anwar Akash, Director, Bangla Academy Australia.

Speakers emphasised the importance of supporting and maintaining the rich diversity of languages in Australia. A number of speakers stressed the crucial part language plays in shaping individual and community identity and enhancing the cultural diversity of Australian society. Speakers also called for more resources to be allocated to the teaching of languages in schools and universities.

The Director of the Bangla Academy, Anwar Akash, welcomed guests and gave an overview of the work of the Bangla Academy in the past nine years. Phil Voysey presented a paper written by Mr. Anwar Akash on the history, objectives and values of Academy’s IMLD program ‘My Language My Freedom’.

Special mention must be made of Anwar Akash’s efforts in pulling the seminar together in a little over a week and a half. Although the number of attendees was small, it is expected that with funding and a longer lead time to plan and promote the event next year, that it will grow to become a significant annual event on Sydney’s multicultural calendar.

Bangla Academy also run a workshop on mother language on 21^st February and 22^nd February organised a language festival, book fair and cultural market at the Punchbowl Boys High School.

International Mother Language Day observed in Sydney

Epping based Bangla Academy Australia observed International Mother Language Day (IMLD) with their Language School at Blacktown, Sydney. On 24th February Academy developed a Monument (Shaheed Minar) to commemorate International Mother Language Day and hosted Book fair, Art Competition, Hand writing competition, Recitation and Musical events participated by students, parents and general audience. Among guests Hon. Julie Owens, Federal member for Parramatta, Hon. John Robertson MP, NSW leader of the opposition and Member of Blacktown were invited as special guests to deliver IMLD message. Julie Owens expressed her gratitude to Bangla speakers, community workers, students and parents of Bangla Academy, she urge not to abolish any more language, as they are the mother languages and by the time so many languages has been lost. John Robertson MP also expressed his feelings about Bangla language. Australia is a lucky country, so everyone learning various languages and religious practice as part of multiculturalism. He conveyed a message for next generation, to know who we are, we must understand our language and culture, which comes through the History and History comes through the Stories and so we get our language. Earlier on the 10th February, academy run a seminar on ‘Bangla is my mother tongue’, conducted by the Director of Bangla Academy Australia Mr. Anwar Akash and Chaired by the most senior member from Bangladesh community Mr. Nazrul Islam. Entire event took place at Blacktown Boys High School.

International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in November 1999.

The date represents in 21 February 1952 when students in Bangladesh, then in East Pakistan, demonstrating for recognition of their language Bangla as one of the two national languages of the country were shot and brutally killed by the police.

Bangla Academy runs a regular Sunday school since 2007 at Blacktown Boys High School. Academy requests all students from Bangla origin family who would like to learn Bangla to come forward for enrolment. Academy observed the day every year since February 2006 to promote rich language, culture and multilingualism in Australia. Bangla Academy also runs a language course for Non Bangla Speakers in Sydney.
